It is a great loss for our church, a loss that echoes a passing 74 years ago on the death anniversary of St. Dionesius Vattasseril Thirumeni. There is no replacement for a spiritual father such as Thirumeni. His Grace worked hard to go beyond fulfilling his duties, as per God's plan. Thirumeni, you achieved the goals with which you were entrusted by our Lord. The last time our family and our Toronto St. Gregorios congregation saw HG Thomas Mar Makarios Thirumeni was when he came for our father’s (Koppara Ghevarghese John) 40th day orma in early December. As dad’s older, second cousin, Thirumeni wanted to conduct both the orma and the funeral. Even during dad’s brief but terminal illness, Thirumeni visited him in the hospital and then immediately after, led the congregation in a Qurbana dedicated to our father.
At dad’s funeral service Makarios Thirumeni pointed to the casket and said “this will happen to all of us. We all have to be prepared for this eventuality.” As grim as this sounded, he also offered words of comfort. “Johnnykutty will be rejoined by loved ones that left this world, just as we have people waiting for us at the airport when we arrive at a new place.”
At that time no one could have imagined Thirumeni at heaven’s ‘arrival gate’ so soon. He will not only be missed as a close, caring and loving relative but also as a wise and visionary shepherd who was always there for his far flung flock. Our only comfort is the certainty that all of Thirumeni’s departed loved ones will be there to greet him, including our father who loved Thirumeni as an older brother since childhood.
We will never forget how instrumental Thirumeni was in the founding and growth of our congregations in Canada, Europe and the U.S. Because of his ardent faith, charm, curiosity, gentle humor, gifted oratory and passion, many young people raised in foreign cultures remain with our ancient church.
A great light that illuminated the Malankara Orthodox Church has been dimmed. We pray for our dear Makarios Thirumeni and entreat him to plead on our behalf in Heaven’s realm.

Words are not enough to express my thoughts and feelings about our Aboon Mor Makarios Thirumeni. God blessed Makarios Thirumeni to be a blessing to all of us. The combination of his magnetic personality and his golden tongue that could command an audience was truly a rare gift. I remember that whenever I had an opportunity to hear a sermon by Thirumeni, there was always a clear and direct underlying message: Love one another as God loves us—Thirumeni lived by that principle and did not waver from it. Thirumeni was replete with wisdom and shared that with us youth while also giving a lending ear to our concerns and thoughts. Our Makarios Thirumeni was a true ambassador of our Malankara Orthodox Church, especially outside of India and his idea on mission in our Church in the context of the western world was refreshing. We should uphold his vision for the growth and progress of our church and continue his initiative for mission. I will always remember our Aboon Mor Makarios. May his memory be eternal! |

H. G. Thomas Mar Makarios Metropolitan, A Blessed Memory
Makarios Thirumeni was the greatest Ambassador of our Church here in the US. In ecumenical circles and among the Kerala community in particular, he stood tall, as a spoke-person for our Church, and as a symbol of what a Bishop should be.
HG was a great communicator. His oratory was highly exceptional. Listening to him was a dream comes true. He was one of the greatest story tellers of our times. HG had high sense of humor. What’s more significant was his unique ability to make jokes at the spur-of-the-moment. His jokes made the listeners think about his topic of speech.
HG valued the traditions and prayers. A few years ago, one of my friends, an Achen told me, “HG used to visit our theological seminary while I was a student. When he visits, he will lead our noon prayers and evening prayers. Even after living in America for so many years, he still can say all the prayers and sing all the songs without the help of any book.” HG was a great teacher and a scholar in Church history.
One of the greatest assets of HG was his unique ability to communicate with youngsters. Those who have listened to HG will never say that sermons are boring. Children loved his presence. HG made them comfortable to open up their mind to share their hopes and concerns.
HG was a humble person. HG once spoke about one of his students who said, “I’m 19 years old, and I know what I’m doing.” In his usual humorous tone Thirumeni replied, “I’m 81 years old, and still sometimes I don’t know what I’m doing.” HG was humble enough to say, “I’m a student of history” even though he was a scholar in history. HG treated others with utmost respect, and ‘with malice toward none’. It’s noteworthy that during his speeches he often said, “Friends, let me tell you….” Yes, we lost a great friend, teacher and a leader. But we can rejoice in the fact that HG is in paradise to plead for us. May his memory be eternal. |

I'll miss you Thirumeni. You were more than just a bishop, you were our friend. We spent many days and nights together. You were my rock in soooo many ways. We shared many stories about life, love, and the future.
I will miss the little things. I will miss the car rides, the late night conversations. Your tough love when I was going astray. Your love when I needed it. I'll miss our walks around Bear Mountain Park. I'll miss the time right after Qurbana when I had you alone for just a few minutes and we would catch up on our lives and enjoy a nice cup of coffee and I know...NO SUGAR. I'll miss our goodbyes at church or at random airports across this country. And of course right before we said goodbye, you would ask for confirmation that I packed the shrimp my mom would make for you in your carry-on luggage.
I won't forget the way you would be upset with me if I was late to pick you up from the airport. I won't forget the time that I was sooo late that you caught your own taxi and went to the hotel on your own. Wow, I felt terrible, but when I saw you that next day, you greeted me w/ that smile and I knew everything would be ok.
I will just miss you. As a child born and raised in the US, you made all of us feel like family. I am sure that I will never be close to a bishop of the church again. And, I'm ok with that because I was FRIENDS with the best Thirumeni this church had to offer.

H.G Mar Makarios Metrolitan was a scholar in Church History. Also, his grace was an orator who could easily win the hearts of the hearers when he deliver the speech.
He was the first metropolitan of the American Diocese and instrumental for its formation and declaration in 1979. I had the fortune to be his student for a year in church history class at the Orthodox Theological Seminary, having a guru-shishya bandham (teacher-student relationsip). His demise is a great loss for the Malankara Orthodox Church.
On behalf of the St. Gregorios Malankara Orthodox Church Philadelphia, I record our heart felt sorrow and respect towards the thirumeni and condolence to the bereaving family members.

I read with great sorrow the death of our Senior Metropolitan His Grace Dr. Thomas Mar Makarios at the New Castle General Hospital in London on February 23, 2008. Needless to say, this is a great loss to the Malankara Orthodox Church. Thirumeni was also the Shepherd of our Church in Germany, which he has visited many times, the last being during the second half of 2007.
Though I didn’t have the honour of meeting with the Thirumeni in person, I did speak to His Grace a couple of times in the 1990s to discuss the possibilities of sending my son for studies at the Alma College in Michigan, where Thirumeni was a leading Professor. His Grace was very caring and positive.
In fact, the labours of Thirumeni’s effort were bearing fruits as the cruel car accident snatched this precious soul away from us!
I join with a mourning heart those thousands who pray for the eternal rest of Thirumeni by the side of our Saviour!

The timing of H.G. Thomas Mar Markarios death wonderfully coincided with the death anniversary of our church illuminator, Saint Vattasseril Thirumeny. Malankara Orthodox Church never would have existed without Saint Vattasseril Thirumeny. We can now remember and celebrate two thirumenies at the same time. No other thirumeny could influence Americans and convert them into becoming Malankara Orthodox Priests. When I talk to one of the American priest, they deeply admire his independence, intelligence, and his vision of for the Mission society of St. Gregorios of India. I have partaken with him in Holy Qurbana in the altar and afterwards sat with him and spoke briefly regarding spiritual and physical matters in order to receive his wisdom and insight.
He has fought the good fight and kept the faith and there is a crown of righteousness awaiting him in heaven. Our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies goes to our beloved Thirumeny and may his soul rest in peace always.

Malankara Orthodox Church never would have existed without Saint Vattasseril Thirumeny. We can now remember and celebrate two thirumenies at the same time. No other thirumeny could influence Americans and convert them into becoming Malankara Orthodox Priests. When I talk to one of the American priest, they deeply admire his independence, intelligence, and his vision of for the Mission society of St. Gregorios of India. I have partaken with him in Holy Qurbana in the altar and afterwards sat with him and spoke briefly regarding spiritual and physical matters in order to receive his wisdom and insight.
He has fought the good fight and kept the faith and there is a crown of righteousness awaiting him in heaven. Our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies goes to our beloved Thirumeny and may his soul rest in peace always.
